What's the job?

The Sr. Director, North America Tax is a finance leader who has the primary responsibility for all Direct and Indirect tax related activities in North America. The role is in charge of developing and planning the company's tax strategies with a focus on lowering the company's effective tax rate and cash taxes, as well as executing against those strategies. This position is also responsible for ensuring compliance with complex and constantly changing tax laws and regulations in a timely and accurate manner along with determining tax provisions and required disclosures of all tax matters in the company's financial reports. This position requires the ability to research and interpret highly technical/complex tax topics and also the competence to effectively communicate the results/strategy recommendations to all levels of executive management.
 
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
 
Tax strategy and planning: Developing and executing comprehensive NA tax strategies that align with the company's business objectives with a focus on lowering the company's effective tax rate and cash taxes, as well as supporting all business development efforts including maximizing credits and incentives.
Stakeholder management: Communicating complex tax concepts to the executive team, finance department, and business units. Advising senior leadership on the tax implications of major decisions, such as mergers and acquisitions, new ventures, or business expansions. Continued maintenance and enhancement of efficient global tax structure. Also, manage relationships with external tax advisors, auditors, and government agencies.
Compliance and reporting: Overseeing all Direct and Indirect tax compliance activities for all NA jurisdictions. This includes managing the tax provision process for financial reporting (e.g., ASC 740, IAS 12, and IFRIC 23) and ensuring accurate disclosures.
 
Tax risk management: Identifying and mitigating tax-related risks through careful management and strategic planning. The role also establishes internal controls over tax processes and reporting to ensure integrity and accuracy. This includes oversight of transfer pricing policies and practices.
Tax Modernization: formulates the vision and roadmap for the evaluation and implementation of new technologies to optimize the key tax processes, including provision, compliance and reporting.
 
Audit management: Oversight of all NA tax audits and examinations by government agencies including developing the company's position on various tax issues and negotiate audit settlements.
 
Team leadership: Building, mentoring, and leading a high-performing team of tax professionals. This includes overseeing the tax department's budget and promoting a culture of continuous learning.
 
 

IS THIS JOB FOR YOU?

What do you bring?

  • Bachelor's degree in business, finance, or related field is required
  • Advanced tax degree in taxation or law (JD/LLM) is strongly preferred
  • CPA is preferred
  • 10-15 years of progressive leadership experience leading a multinational corporate tax department is required
  • Direct experience in a manufacturing environment with extensive international operations is required
  • Big four public accounting and/or Fortune 500 multinational experience is required
  • The ability to think strategically, solve complex problems, and translate tax issues into clear business insights for senior management is critical
  • Experience with tax compliance software (e.g., OneSource or Corptax) and enterprise resource planning (ERP) systems is required
  • Exceptional communication, interpersonal, and leadership skills are necessary for managing a team and influencing decisions at the executive level.
