Innovation is at the heart of our business strategy. Focused on breakthrough innovations and continuous development of our products, our R&D centers build solutions that improve our world.  

Building Science

Saint-Gobain Research North America’s research programs in building science develop solutions for sustainable buildings and construction. The built environment constitutes nearly 40% of global carbon dioxide emissions and the consumption of nearly 50% of natural resources. As we work to achieve net-zero carbon emissions by 2050, our R&D teams are focused on developing solutions that will reduce embodied carbon in new products, conserve natural resources, and increase recycling and reuse of discarded materials. 

Innovative Materials

Innovative Materials R&D teams work with business and customer partners to solve problems in challenging industrial markets. Combining expertise in materials sciences, process technologies, and markets, our scientists and engineers use their technical mastery to deliver: 

Ceramic for applications that include refractories, electronics, furnacing, and space flight

Abrasives solutions that grind, finish, and polish nearly everything we touch today, shaping the future

Solutions from life-saving bio-pharma applications to high-performance industrial components including foams, films, seals, and bearings 

Technical fabrics that extend roadway life, protect human life, and shelter the world 

Construction chemicals that lower embodied carbon in concrete, historically a material which generates a high amount of CO2

CertainTeed Innovation Malvern focuses on our Internal Products Group (gypsum wallboard, insulation, and architectural) as well as Roofing Products Group.

In 2016, we relocated to Malvern, PA. Using 60+ of our sustainable building products in a systems-based approach, we created a workplace that encourages productivity, collaboration, and well-being.

A Building as Dynamic as the People Inside

We partnered with the University of Oregon’s School of Architecture & Environment to study how a systems-based approach to design can positively impact thermal, visual, and acoustical performance, and indoor air quality to achieve overall comfort, productivity, and well-being.
