The Quality Technician leads and supports activities related to the implementation, maintenance, control, and monitoring of quality systems and standards which monitor, assess, and approve the quality of materials and products at all stages of production, in accordance with corporate quality policies, applicable regulatory requirements, ISO requirements, and customer specifications/expectations. Under the general direction of the Regional Quality Manager with site support from the Operations Manager, the Quality Technician is responsible for implementing, maintaining, and facilitating quality system improvements. Quality systems that may be responsible for this position are receiving, in-process & final inspection/testing/release, product auditing, product certification, calibration, complaint handling, CAPA, and non-conforming material control/handling.

WHAT ARE THE REQUIREMENTS?

  • 2–5 years of experience in manufacturing or construction with a focus on building products
  • 1–2 years in a quality role within a manufacturing environment.
  • Must have knowledge of quality systems such as ISO 9001, cGMP, and ISO 13485, as well as experience with quality systems and product/process lifecycle management in manufacturing.
  • Strong technical writing and investigative skills are necessary, along with proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, Visio, PowerPoint, and Project.
  • Training in Six Sigma or continuous improvement methodologies is also required.

What’s the job?

CertainTeed is looking for a licensed Structural Engineer (PE) to join our Offsite Solutions business. In this role, you will help design and analyze prefabricated buildings and systems, as well as develop and launch new products and processes to improve the sustainability, performance, and appeal of residential and occasionally non-residential buildings.

The position is based in Saint-Gobain Research North America in Northborough, Massachusetts. Some travel, including international, would be required to job sites, partners, factories, and to other Saint-Gobain and CertainTeed locations.

Responsibilities

  • Design, evaluate, and improve upon residential building structural systems.
  • Leading the design and building of both small- and large-scale prototypes of new building products, systems, and processes to show to both internal and external customers for feedback to iterate on solutions. Knowing that innovation is an iterative process, you will need to stay open-minded about what the right product is, seeking to learn as much from what does not work as from what does.
  • Proposing innovative technologies for the building industry.
  • Developing and documenting product designs, construction details, and installation processes.
  • Reviewing and preparing calculations, drawing sets, 3D BIM (Building Information Modeling) models, and shop drawings to support the needs of a growing Offsite Solutions business.
  • Interfacing with consulting engineers, builders, developers, architects, and manufacturing partners for the design and production of panelized walls, roofs, and floors.
  • Supporting product management in identifying new opportunities and developing solutions to meet customer needs.
  • Documenting work through preparing and reviewing reports, presentations, and patent filings.
  • Mentoring both technical and non-technical members on building practices and code requirements.

 

WHAT ARE THE REQUIREMENTS?

What do you bring?

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Structural Engineering, Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Architectural Engineering, Building & Construction Technology, Building Science, or related fields required. Master’s Degree preferred.
  • Structural Engineering Professional License (at least one state, with ability to obtain licensure in other states within 6 months) required.
  • 5+ years’ experience in structural engineering and building design required.
  • Experience working in construction, architecture, engineering, or design-build office required.
  • Experience in prefabricated construction (3D Modular or 2D Panelized) strong preferred.
  • Experience applying building industry standards (including SEI, ASTM, NFPA, ICC) required.
  • Strong knowledge of residential building construction practices, IRC and IBC building codes, means and methods, materials, industry standards and hands on experience.
  • Deep understanding of wood-framed and timber-framed construction and industry standards.
  • Residential structural engineering experience, including single-family detached homes, townhomes, and multi-family residential construction.
  • Curious, open-minded, pragmatic, and creative problem-solving abilities with a hands-on approach to design.
  • Knowledge of prototyping at multiple scales, including being comfortable working safely with power tools.
  • Experience in 3D CAD (SolidWorks, Fusion 360, Rhino, etc.) and/or 3D BIM software packages (Revit, Cadwork, Vertex BD, etc.).
  • Knowledge of building science concepts (IEQ (Indoor Environmental Quality), IAQ (Indoor Air Quality), hygrothermal transfer, waterproofing, durability) is a plus.
  • Experience applying building industry standards (including ASTM, NFPA, ICC) is a plus.
  • Knowledge of sustainable building practices and certifications like Energy Star, Zero Energy Ready Home Program, or Passive House (Phius) a plus.
  • Strong project management experience.
  • Outstanding oral and written communication skills, and ability to adjust style and content to the audience.

Key Responsibilities

  • Equipment Operation: Operate and maintain manufacturing equipment specific to the assigned area according to standard procedures and safety protocols while ensuring product specifications, quality, and accuracy.  
  • Quality Control: Ensure that all products meet quality standards by consistently monitoring for accuracy and detail throughout production and reporting any deficiencies to the supervisor.
  • Maintain Equipment: Perform basic maintenance on machines and equipment, including cleaning and routine checks.
  • Documentation: Accurately record production data, such as quantities, times, and other relevant information.
  • Material Handling: Load and unload materials by hand or using a forklift.
  • Continuous Improvement: Identify opportunities to improve processes and participate in Lean Manufacturing or other improvement initiatives.
  • Team Collaboration: Work collaboratively with other production operators and team members to achieve daily and weekly production targets.
  • Safety Compliance: Follow all safety guidelines and company protocols to maintain a safe working environment, wear all required personal protective safety equipment (PPE), and participate in safety training.

Work Environment: Exposure to working near moving mechanical parts, working in extreme weather conditions. It is hot in the summer months (no AC) and cold in the winter months (limited heating). Occasionally fumes/airborne particles, the noise level is moderate to loud.

WHAT ARE THE REQUIREMENTS?

  • Education: High school diploma or equivalent preferred.
  • Experience: Prior experience in a manufacturing or production environment preferred.
  • Skills:
    • Strong attention to detail and quality

POSITION SUMMARY

In alignment with company vision, mission, values, and objectives, the technician will troubleshoot, repair, maintain and improve mechanical systems with the intent of improving uptime and efficiency.

  • Shift duration: 8hr shift times - currently hiring for 2nd and 3rd shifts.
  • Base rate: $35.11 based on demonstrated Technical Skill Level
  • EFFECTIVE RATE: $37.40 - $47.35 this rate reflects what you’ll earn after factoring in shift differentials and OT pay
  • Shift Differential: $0.35/hr 2nd Shift and $0.45/hr 3rd Shift

**A technician skills evaluation is required for this role.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES

  • Ensures operation of machinery, electrical, and mechanical equipment by completing preventive maintenance requirements on engines, motors, pneumatic tools, conveyor systems, and production machines; following diagrams, sketches, operations manuals, manufacturer's instructions, and engineering specifications; troubleshooting malfunctions.
  • Locates sources of problems by observing mechanical and electrical devices in operation; listening for problems; using precision measuring and testing instruments.
  • Removes defective parts by dismantling devices; using hoists, cranes, and hand and power tools; examining form and texture of parts.
  • Determines changes in dimensional requirements of parts by inspecting used parts; using rules, calipers, micrometers, and/or other measuring instruments.
  • Adjusts functional parts of devices and control instruments by using hand tools, levels, plumb bobs, and straightedges.
  • Controls downtime by informing production workers of routine preventive maintenance techniques; monitoring compliance.
  • Fabricates repair parts by using machine shop instrumentation and equipment.
  • Maintains equipment, parts, and supplies inventories by checking stock to determine inventory level; anticipating needed equipment, parts, and supplies; placing and expediting orders; verifying receipt.
  • Conserves maintenance resources by using equipment and supplies as needed to accomplish job results.
  • Provides mechanical and electrical maintenance information by answering questions and requests.
  • Prepares mechanical and electrical maintenance reports by collecting, analyzing, and summarizing information and trends.
  • Troubleshoot/Diagnose 3-phase, up to 480V causes of electrical or mechanical malfunction or failure of operation equipment, utilizing standard electronic test equipment while referencing technical drawings and documents
  • Maintains technical knowledge by attending educational workshops; reviewing technical publications; establishing personal networks.
  • Maintains continuity among work teams by documenting and communicating actions, irregularities, and continuing needs.
  • Maintains safe and clean working environment by complying with procedures, rules, and regulations.
  • Contributes to team effort by accomplishing related results as needed.
  • Documents time through work orders and creates notification within SAP CMMS system
  • Uses Quick Kaizens to help with completing root cause analysis
  • Helps to create BOMs for equipment by creating equipment ledgers
  • Create and update documentation of all types: schematic diagrams, wiring diagrams, assembly diagrams, maintenance logs, standard operating procedures, and instruction manuals, to keep documentation accurate, available and ready for use as needed.

WHAT ARE THE REQUIREMENTS?

MINIMUM KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS REQUIRED

  • Requires a high school diploma or GED.
  • High School Education and/or AS or AAS Electrical/Electronic Technology Degree, Mechatronics, Industrial Technology or AS or BS in Electronics Engineering Technology or Mechanical Engineering Technology or
  • Five to ten (5-10) years of professional experience and knowledge in maintenance disciplines, such as automated control systems, safety qualifications, and professional industrial maintenance in a manufacturing environment.
  • Requires adaptability, methodical/analytical problem solving skills, and employee leadership skills with the ability to effectively apply these skills in a manufacturing facility.
  • Team player with good interpersonal skills and written and verbal communication skills to work effectively in corporate, manufacturing and team environments.
  • Basic typing skills and proficient in utilization of Microsoft Office, including Excel and or Office.

PREFERRED OR DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • 2 year technical degree in Industrial Maintenance or Industrial Systems Technology.
  • ARC Flash Training
  • Familiarity with Lean/WCM principles and practices.

  • Applies glue, seals boxes for proper adhesive setup, assures that finished package has neat appearance, stacks product on finished product rack.

When uncertainty arises, consultation with management is required to determine the best course of action. The ability to assess strengths, weaknesses, and alternative solutions is essential for addressing challenges effectively.

The Quality Engineer plays a crucial role in resolving customer requests and issues promptly while maintaining professional and tactful communication with both colleagues and customers. Regular, direct interaction with customers is required.

Actively promotes a safe working environment, complies with proper use of PPE, reports incidents, and participates in functional department safety meetings.

WHAT ARE THE REQUIREMENTS?

This career position requires a Bachelor's degree in one of the Life Sciences or Engineering, (chemistry, biology, or microbiology preferred).

ASQ certifications (e.g. CQE, CQM, CQA) and training in Six Sigma/continuous improvement/WCM methodologies are preferred.

Professional experience as detailed below is also required:

- 2+ years' experience in a regulated industry (e.g. pharma, biopharm, automotive or medical device)
