Senior Research Technician – Grinding & Finishing Technology

The Grinding and Finishing Technology division of Saint-Gobain Research North America is seeking a motivated Senior Research Technician to join their team in Northboro, MA.

The Senior Research Technician safely performs moderately complex activities and/or product development activities with minimal supervision. The new hire will collaborate with engineers and customers to solve related problems and address specific client needs. In addition, this position may also perform advanced specialized technical functions involving testing, analyzing, improving, installing, operating, and/or solving problems concerning complex processes, equipment, and products for assigned areas.

Essential Functions

  • Conduct experiments in the areas of finishing, grinding, machining, tribology, and metrology on a variety of machines and a variety of materials including metals, polymers, and ceramics.
  • Work with project leaders to develop new test methods, improve existing techniques, and update and create SOPs. 
  • Work with engineers and internal customers to collaborate on the design of special fixtures & tooling.
  • Use electronic data acquisition and metrology tools, such as micrometers and surface profilometers, to collect process information. 
  • Record test and measurement data.   
  • Perform preliminary statistical data analysis and present results.  
  • Maintain laboratory equipment including set-up, operation, and troubleshooting of experimental equipment or instruments.   Lead troubleshooting initiatives and machine repair efforts.
  • Perform preventive maintenance on equipment

REQUIREMENTS:

  • Associate degree in an engineering, technical, or science-related field or in lieu of degree demonstrated equivalent knowledge with 4-7 years of experience
  • Work experience with various equipment such as complex assembly and processing or test equipment with CN/CNC & PLC controls, and/or lathes, milling machines, grinders, and other finishing machines
  • Ability to read engineering drawings
  • Experience in Microsoft products including Excel
  • Knowledge of AutoCAD, SOLID Works, and other CAD/CAM systems is desired
  • Knowledge of CNC programming is desired

Position Summary

The Assistant Loading Supervisor, under the direction of the Loading Supervisor, will primarily be responsible for supporting the Loading Supervisor, overseeing the safe loading of trucks, assisting customers, and providing guidance and direction to the other shipping employees. This position is hands-on and will require the successful candidate to learn and perform all aspects of loading. This position will ensure that all employees comply with company policies, procedures, and safety standards. This role will also ensure effectiveness of employees through assignment of duties, discipline, and dismissal.

What you’ll do:

  • Ensure safe work practices are being followed.
  • Ensure that employees adhere to all health and safety regulations.
  • Ensure that all staff under your direction are equipped with and are using the proper personal protective equipment.
  • Ensure that every employee under your direction is trained on every task they will be required to perform throughout their shift ie. safe operation, paperwork completion, banding/strapping, housekeeping, setting up trailers, etc.
  • Ensure that the Loading lead hands are effectively training and monitoring the loading team.
  • Oversee staff to ensure work is being performed according to established standards.
  • With the support of Human Resources, handle employee complaints and incidents, including conflict resolution, accidents, health and safety concerns, work refusals, and investigations.
  • Ensure that loads are shipped completely and that the trucks are loaded safely.
  • Work closely with the Logistics Coordinator and the Loading Supervisor to determine daily priorities.
  • Notify the sales team of any product that did not make it on the truck.
  • Inspect the racks and surrounding area on a daily basis to ensure that product is not forgotten.
  • Ensure that all trucks have the required load manifest paperwork.
  • Determine areas of improvement for employees, providing additional training as needed.
  • Celebrate successes and foster an atmosphere of success.
  • Provide informal feedback and coaching to staff on an ongoing basis and document those discussions.
  • Ensure employees have clear goals and are aware of expectations.
  • Participate in site and workplace inspections.
  • Liaise with other departments as well as other shifts to ensure that all parties are aware of the priorities for the day.
  • Assist with the loading of customer vehicles or the loading of trucks as required.
  • Safely operate material handling equipment such as the Moffetts, Combi-lift forklifts, and counterbalance forklifts.
  • Unload shipments from vendors as required.
  • Assist with the control of traffic in the yard.
  • Ensure that the employees under your direction maintain a clean working environment.
  • Ensure that all employees take allotted vacation time in compliance with applicable employment and labour standards.
  • Approve vacation requests and monitor vacation schedules to ensure appropriate coverage.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications and Requirements:

  • Strong focus on safety.

  • Successful completion of Supervisor Competency training.
  • Successful completion of forklift training.

Position Summary

The Purchasing Manager, under the guidance of the President, will be responsible for enhancing our purchasing practices and procedures. This position will work closely with our Purchasing team and oversee all purchasing tasks including raw materials, equipment, services, and supplies. The main focus will be on steel purchasing as it amounts to roughly 70% of Agway’s product costs and availability of steel is our most critical determinant for meeting customer expectations. This role will work closely with the Director of Metal Procurement to make sound purchasing decisions. This position will also challenge the status quo and investigate new products, suppliers, and be instrumental in vendor selection and contract negotiations.

What you’ll do:

  • Work closely with the Director of Sales to monitor inventory and determine supply needs to meet customer demand with an in-depth knowledge of market pricing and replacement costs of steel.
  • Work with the Director of Metal Procurement to make decisions regarding steel purchasing needs.
  • Analyze market trends and use this information to make informed purchasing decisions.
  • Prepare data/analysis for weekly steel procurement meetings.
  • Review supply outages, determine the root causes, and adjust the Purchasing program, if required.
  • Assist other departments with purchasing needs including the IT Department, Logistics Department, and Manufacturing Department.
  • Manage other members of the Purchasing team which currently includes the Purchasing coordinator (Steel Procurement) and the Purchasing Administrator.
  • Negotiate prices and contracts with vendors.
  • Build and maintain relationships with vendors.
  • Research new vendors and contact vendors for quotes.
  • Evaluate existing vendors based on quality, timeliness, and price.
  • Evaluate existing vendor contracts and revise as required.
  • Advise management about vendor price increases.
  • In consultation with the Director of Metal Procurement, create the annual Purchasing budget.
  • Use forecasting techniques to ensure that we are maintaining appropriate inventory levels based on seasonality (and other) requirements.
  • Review inventory min/max settings in the ERP system to ensure accuracy.
  • Assist the Sales department with any purchasing inquiries.
  • Review and approve special purchasing requests.
  • Make informed decisions regarding whether a product should be stocked in our plants.
  • Other duties as assigned.

 Qualifications and Requirements:

  • At least 5 years of experience as a Purchasing Manager.
  • Strong analytical skills.
  • Commitment to ethical business practices.
  • Experience in steel procurement is preferred.
  • Having a purchasing designation is an asset.
  • Strong organizational skills.
  • Process-oriented.
  • Advanced knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Microsoft Dynamics experience is an asset.

The Health and Safety Manager, under the guidance of the VP of Operations, People and Culture, will primarily be responsible for maintaining and improving our Health and Safety program for all of our facilities. The successful candidate must be willing to travel to all of our locations on an ongoing basis. This position is hands-on and does not have any direct reports. The successful candidate must be willing to be hands-on in this role and take care of all required aspects of Health and Safety.

  • Maintain Health and Safety training records in our Health and Safety Management System.
  • Conduct ongoing meetings with the supervisory team to ensure buy-in with health and safety objectives.
  • Source external resources for H&S consulting services such as machine safeguarding analyses, ergonomic assessments, etc.
  • Ensure SDS sheets are maintained for all chemicals.
  • Perform annual chemical audits to ensure that all chemicals onsite are listed in the SDS books.
  • Provide monthly Health and Safety metrics to the VP of Operations, People and Culture.
  • Coordinate annual fire drills.
  • Review the pre-use inspections to ensure that operators are consistently filling them out.
  • Work with the supervisors to develop SOP's, JHA's, and Pre-use inspections for any new pieces of equipment.
  • Distribute monthly safety talks for the supervisors to present to their employees.
  • Maintain the Health and Safety notice boards.
  • Monitor training expiry dates and ensure that employees are re-trained prior to expiring.
  • Co-ordinate overhead crane and forklift theory training.
  • Provide safety training to newly onboarded employees.
  • Continuously be present on the shop floor identifying any areas of concern.
  • Notify supervisors on any situations that are unsafe and document those discussions.
  • Conduct monthly inspections of all First Aid supplies to ensure that supplies are fully stocked.
  • Monitor incident reports entered by supervisors.
  • Prepare WSIB Form 7's for any reported employee accident.
  • Maintain the list of contractors ensuring that we have on file WSIB Clearance, Insurance, and Contractor Safety Manuals.
  • Participate in any onsite Health and Safety workplace inspections.
  • Assist with the RTW program.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications and Requirements:

A CRST or CRSP designation is preferred for this position.

Provided is the national pay range for this position which is $102,000 to $158,000.   However, the base pay offered may vary depending on geographic region, internal equity, job-related knowledge, skills, and experience among other factors.

 

In addition to base salary, this position is eligible for an annual bonus. The targeted bonus amount is 13% of base salary based on company and individual performance measures. The Total Target Cash range (base pay and annual bonus) for this position, is $115,200 to $178,500. Bonus payments are part of variable compensation and by nature can vary based on company and individual performance and is not a guarantee.

Senior Technical Specialist

WHY DO WE NEED YOU?

Saint Gobain Life Sciences, a global leader in fluid management solutions and components, is seeking a hands-on team player to join their R&D team as a Senior Technical Specialist based at the Saint-Gobain Research North America Center in Northborough, Massachusetts. The position will report to the LS MT&I Process Innovation and Testing team supporting development of new products, manufacturing technologies through various prototyping methods and mechanical tests involving thermoplastic and silicone elastomers. The candidate will execute various mechanical & pump tests in addition to silicone extrusion of tubing under direction of a Senior Engineer. The position will be hands-on mechanical, involving handling material throughout compounding, prototyping and shutdown/maintenance/cleanout of lab scale to medium size equipment such as mills, presses and extruders. Testing involves characterizing mechanical properties of polymers per ASTM standards, Universal/Instron tester, hardness, customer specific application testing and test method development.

The individual must have a willingness to learn, apply test methods at a level consistent to meet validation (quantity and quality), maintain data collection/integrity standards and be able to setup/execute experiments both independently and under direction. Basic statistical data analysis, presenting data to a small team and electronically updating test requisition status using software e.g. Monday.com, uploading to other databases may be requested.

SG Life Sciences Essential Functions and Competencies:

  • Prepare, process and test materials for various bioprocess, medical, industrial and consumer fluid handling applications.
  • Working specifically with elastomeric tubing, silicone/TPE prototyping, extrusion, molding, mechanical property testing and other defect analysis.
  • Collect, analyze and document scientific and engineering data obtained from equipment.
  • Setup, operation, cleaning and preventative maintenance/troubleshooting of extrusion and lab equipment or instruments.
  • Plays an active role in lab management and meeting site specific goals to maintain and continuously improve Safety & 5S workplace organization e.g. HSE objectives, lab postings, safety audits, tours.
  • Provide basic interpretation of data related to trouble shooting customer problems and other technical issues.
  • Foster an open collaborative approach with other technicians and engineers (LS R&D, LS Manufacturing and CRL) to support work request intake, problem solving, training and share information in all areas of responsibility.
  • Interact with Facilities, contractors, HSE and vendors to address lab/equipment issues.
  • Non-routine test development such as design of fixtures and methods for experiments and simulation.
  • Maintain lab supply inventories, shipment logistics etc.

Required Qualifications

Internal candidates: 2-5 years of experience as a Senior Research Technician.

External candidates: High School Diploma, GED or equivalent certificate with 7 or more years of experience; Associate degree with 4 years of experience. Prefer past experiences in R&D or manufacturing with some materials focus, areas of product development, testing, quality or operating equipment.

  • Experience applying standardized test methods to characterize material properties in accordance with precise requirements in either an R&D or manufacturing environment.
  • Experience operating and maintaining lab scale and medium size equipment for compounding, molding, prototyping, extrusion (preferred), curing etc. Training will be provided.
  • Previous experience with Universal/Instron type testers preferred.
  • Mechanical aptitude and hands on capability A MUST.
  • Capability to use personal computer and Microsoft Office applications, such as Excel, Word and Teams etc. for documentation, results and communication.
  • General laboratory knowledge, proper chemical handling and lab etiquette.

Production Supervisor

What’s the job?

This position is located at our unionized wallboard plant in Calgary operates 24/7.

The Production Supervisor works a 12hr continental shift on A 2-2-3 work schedule which requires employees to work 12-hour shifts in a 28-day rotating shift cycle. Four teams work 2 days in a row, get 2 days off, then work another 3 days. Typically, the teams will work opposite schedules throughout the 28-day cycle – rotating from days to nights.

Reporting to the Production Manager, the Production Supervisor is responsible for creating a culture of engagement within and between the plant teams to directly impact and consistently meet plant objectives and deliverables. This position is also accountable for ensuring that production teams work collaboratively in the decision-making processes and that the decisions are in alignment with plant goals and objectives, World Class Manufacturing (WCM) standards, Key Performance Indicator’s (KPI), safety requirements and current Human Resources (HR) guidelines. Finally, the Production Supervisor is responsible for all activities at the site and acts as the primary point of contact in off-hours and on weekends in the absence of plant management.

You will also be responsible for:

  • Shift performance reporting as required
  • Communicating with other Production Supervisors to at shift changeovers.
  • Accurate and timely recording of production data through IN4.0RM, PCS and SAP.
  • Coaches and mentor operators by influencing behaviors to meet assigned objectives to improve plant performance.
  • Manages the performance of operators to achieve targets across EHS, Quality, Production and WCM Progress.
  • Coordinates production operators’ participation in WCM / Lean projects as part of daily work expectations. Leads AM projects and Kaizen events.
  • Continuously evaluates workplace for safety concerns and ensures behavioral safety initiatives are performed to goal levels.
  • Through coordination with other departments, leads production of drywall in a manner such that shipments meet customer requirements.
  • Ensure product is to specification and meets identified quality standards.
